คำ Slang สามารถเกิดขึ้นได้ซักกี่วิธี อะไรบ้าง ?

Slang คือภาษาที่แกว่งไปจากภาษาเดิม (slinging language)
ดังนั้นคำว่า Slang ก็มาจากพยัญชนะต้นของคำทั้งสองผสมกัน

1. Slang อาจเกิดจากการตั้งคำใหม่ ไม่มีเค้าความหมายเดิมเลย เช่น jive, be-hop และ hot-rod เป็นต้น

2. Slang อาจเกิดจากการนำคำเดิมมาตัดให้สั้นเข้า เช่น natch (= naturally), biz (= business) และ Frisco (= San Francisco) เป็นต้น

3. Slang อาจเกิดจากคำเดิมนั้นเอง แต่เปลี่ยนความหมายใหม่เพื่อให้เข้าใจเฉพาะในหมู่คณะ เช่น doll (= baby), bug (= electric buzzer) และ smear (= large amount) เป็นต้น

4. Slang อาจเกิดจากการเอาคำสองคำมาตั้งเป็นคำที่สาม เช่น debutramp (debutante + tramp), slanguage (slinging + language) และ brunch (breakfast + lunch) เป็นต้น
